AUBURN — Police on Monday identified the driver of an SUV that struck an elderly man crossing Hotel Road to retrieve his newspaper Sunday morning.

Tyler Todd, 37, of Farmington Falls was southbound on Hotel Road around 10 a.m. when his vehicle struck 81-year-old Robert Burns Sr. In his attempt to avoid Burns, Todd lost control of his Ford Explorer, police said in a news release.

Burns was taken to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston and was in an induced coma in the Intensive Care Unit. He suffered a fractured skull and a brain bleed.

He was listed in stable condition Sunday and was under observation.

The cause of the crash is still under investigation. Local police were assisted by an accident reconstructionist from the Lewiston Police Department.

No charges had been brought and no citations issued, police said.
