The Blue Devils scored 15 straight points to flip an 8-1 deficit to a 16-8 advantage.
During the run, The found open cutters, including on inbound-play buckets by Skylar Gaudette and Morgan Eliasen. The Blue Devils fed the post, drove the lane and hit 3-pointers.
“I think we were moving the ball more. We had our heads up, and we were moving the ball,” Lewiston coach Lynn Girouard said.
The Blue Devils also played the passing lanes and controlled the glass on the defensive end.
Early in Lewiston’s run, Scarborough subbed out all five starters. As the the Red Storm’s lead turned into a deficit coach Michael Giordano put his starters back in with 3:39 remaining in the first quarter.
“We’re coming off a pretty sound beating against Gorham, and I was wondering how we were going to respond today,” Giordano said. “We jumped out 8-1, but then Lewiston jumped right back at us. And then I liked the way we responded after that, we jumped right back at them.”
The Blue Devils finished the quarter strong, capped by Kasey Talarico splitting two defenders for a layup that made it 20-15.
“A 20-point quarter,” Girouard said. “I don’t know if we’ve had one of those this yet this year. To get 20 points in the first quarter was great, we were on a great run, but then we only scored seven in the second quarter.”
The Red Storm and Blue Devils swapped the lead a few times before Scarborough took it for good at 26-25.
“In the second quarter, we held (the ball) a little longer,” Girouard said. “Like on the reversals, we kind of held it. Didn’t attack the rim the way that we did in the first quarter. Our offense just kind of went stagnant a little bit.”
The Red Storm’s lead at halftime was 32-27. They started to pull away by scoring the first five points of the second half to open up a 10-point lead.
The gap was 11 points, 45-34, after three quarters, but Lewiston fought back to within six points, 47-41, with about two minutes remaining.
“It was a battle, not much you can say,” Girouard said.
“We did hang with them,” Girouard added, “but they’re well-coached, they settle the ball down and are patient on offense.”
Freshman Maddy Foster topped Lewiston with 15 points.
“She played really well,” Girouard said. “She’s been, every game, progressively getting better. I think she’s getting more comfortable at the varsity level.
“I think she’s made a big turnaround, and I like her productivity so far.”
Victoria Harris scored 10 points for Lewiston, while Eliasen and Hannah Chaput each scored seven.
Scarborough’s Sophie Glidden scored a game-high 16 points, though Lewiston’s defense, particularly Eliasen, held her to a single field goal after halftime. Josie Couture added 12 points for Scarborough (8-1), and Lindsey Kelley and Brooke Malone each scored 10.
“We got to move on,” Girouard said. “We got a big game next week. We wanted this one, but Scarborough’s a great team.”
Lewiston (4-5) plays at unbeaten Oxford Hills (10-0) on Thursday.
