1923 – 2017

GRAY—Irene L. Lavoie, 93, died Sunday, Jan. 22.

Born in North Yarmouth, April 8, 1923, the daughter of Joseph and Laura Fortier Blais of North Yarmouth, Irene graduated from Greely Institute of Cumberland Center, Class of 1942 and a two-year business administration course at Acme Business College in Lewiston, graduating in 1944.

On July 15, 1944, she married her four-year Army sweetheart, Arthur Lavoie; they were happily married 55 years. They had two children, Rose and Ronald.

Irene loved cooking, baking, gardening, sewing, crocheting and outdoor lobster feeds. She loved going to Saturday night dancing with her husband, friends and neighbors at Harmony Hall, New Gloucester Veterans Hall, Gray American Legion Hall, Brown Bag for Country Music and square dancing. She enjoyed family gatherings with Arthur’s French people.

They operated Lavoie’s Variety in North Yarmouth for eight years.

She is survived by her daughter, Rose Dorr of Gray; a sister, Yvonne Marston of Florida; five grandchildren, Tom Dorr, Vicki, Lisa, Allison, Adrienne; several great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchildren; several nephews and a niece.

She was predeceased by her son, Ronald.
