WILTON — The Planning Board on Thursday unanimously approved a permit for the Wilton Fish & Game Club to expand its shooting range.
During a public hearing attended by over 60 residents, club members and abutters, the board listened to concerns about noise and regulations.
The approval was based on the club’s site application, which involves creating a U-shaped berm. Members acknowledged concerns about noise and site security and strongly suggested the club try to address them.
The plan includes building berms for small-caliber gunshots. It would require earth to be moved, Planning Board Chairman Charles Lavin said.
Concerns about a vernal pool near the proposed range have been addressed by the Maine Department of Environmental Protection and the club has a DEP permit.
The berm is expected to provide more safety, club President Philip Maurais said.
The club provides an opportunity for hunters to sight their rifles and education for young hunters, club member Russell Black said.
Concerns of residents included enforcement of what type of gun is used and early-morning and evening shooting.
Club members said there are rules for who can shoot and when and cameras are in place for security measures.
Police Chief Heidi Wilcox encouraged neighbors to call police if they are bothered by trespassers shooting outside club hours.
Some residents asked the board to deny the permit until the club could address noise and trespassing issues.
Maurais said he would check on a sound barrier for the range.
