NORWAY — The 40th annual Norway-Paris Fish and Game Association Ice Fishing Derby will take place from sunrise to sunset Saturday, Feb. 25, and Sunday, Feb. 26.
Fishing can be done on any area lake or pond, according to President Sylvia Bosse of Norway. Weigh-in will be at the Little Red Schoolhouse on Route 118 in Norway.
There are two age categories: juniors (ages 12 years and younger) and adults.
For the largest bass, togue, pike, salmon, pickerel, brown trout, rainbow trout, brook trout or splake, adults will receive $50; juniors will receive a trophy.
Tickets to the derby are $1 each.
“If you don’t want to fish and you want to get into the raffle, we have some outstanding raffle prizes that are donated by local quilters, local businesses . . . and campgrounds,” Bosse said. “We’re hoping to sell a lot of tickets just on the raffle.”
Proceeds will pay to send area children to the University of Maine 4-H Camp & Learning Center at Bryant Pond this summer. The past two years, the club has sent 14 children for a week, she said.
The club will sell hamburgers, hot dogs, homemade chili and chowder, and baked goods at the Little Red Schoolhouse.
“People can come in for lunch and fish stories,” Bosse said.
Jeff Witham, owner of Jeff’s Bait and Tackle in Oxford, will be on Norway Lake on Sunday, Feb. 26, to give lessons and free traps to children.
Bosse said she was pleased he planned to return this year.
“He likes the kids and the kids like him,” she said.
