Free Fishing Days this weekend
Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife has announced that free fish days will be this weekend, Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 18 and 19.
Any person may fish for free without a license on Maine’s waterways, except those who have had their license suspended or revoked. All other rules and regulations, including bag and possession limits, apply.
Due to varying weather conditions this winter, the Department reminds anglers to be cautious and check ice conditions before venturing out.
A free fishing weekend for open water season is planned for June 3 and 4.

Scholarship for UMS, MMA students
ORONO — University Credit Union has announced the second year of its scholarship program. The program will award eight $1,000 scholarships to students beginning their studies in the fall 2017 semester at one of the seven University of Maine System campuses or Maine Maritime Academy.
The eight $1,000 scholarships will be awarded to a student at each of the following schools: University of Maine, University of Maine Augusta, University of Maine Farmington, University of Maine Fort Kent, University of Maine Machias, University of Maine Presque Isle, University of Southern Maine and Maine Maritime Academy.
The deadline to apply for the scholarship is May 1, 2017. Scholarship winners will be notified by May 19, 2017.

‘Mediterranean Flowers in Maine Gardens’
PARIS — The annual McLaughlin Garden Lecture Series will kick off Wednesday, Feb. 22, when garden volunteer Harriet Robinson of Otisfield presents an illustrated lecture “Mediterranean Flowers in Maine Gardens.”
Robinson has a doctorate in classical archaeology and has traveled to Greece for many years. After enjoying and photographing wildflowers in Greece, especially Crete, she decided to try to grow some of them in her garden. She also uses her undergraduate major in Ancient Greek to explore the mythology behind flower names and translate botanical names.
The lecture series will be held at 4 p.m. on six consecutive Wednesdays upstairs in Barnard McLaughlin’s historic home, 97 Main St. Tea will begin at 3:30 p.m. The cost to attend is by donation.
CRIBBAGE for a CAUSE
LEWISTON — The CRIBBAGE for a CAUSE fundraiser for Buckfield Fire and Rescue to purchase a lifesaving AED, sponsered by Mended Hearts of Central Maine, Chapter 358, will be held from 1 to 6 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 26, at Schemengees Bar and Grill on Lincoln St, Lewiston.
Sign up will be held from 1 to 1:30 p.m., and play begins at 2 p.m.
The cost is $10 per player, and partners are the luck of the draw. The top three players will earn cash prizes. There will be 50/50 nd table raffles.
Mechanic Falls Historical Society meeting
MECHANIC FALLS — The Mechanic Falls Historical Society will meet at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 22, at the Anglican Church, 64 Elm St.
Any person who seeks to join the society in preserving the documents and artifacts of the community may attend the meeting.
