SOUTH PORTLAND — Brooke Reynolds and Jenny Schlim led the Mustangs with 14 points apiece as Central Maine Community College dispatched the University of Maine at Augusta, 69-60, in women’s basketball action Saturday afternoon in the semifinal round of the Yankee Conference playoffs.
The Mustangs, top-ranked in the USCAA, entered intermission leading 29-28. The game was cemented when CMCC came out of the locker room and rattled off a 13-0 run to start the second half. Reynolds scored six of her 14 points during the run.
Jamie Plummer finished with a game-high 21 points, and Caren Bragg tipped in 14 points for the Moose in the losing effort.
Amherst 76, Bates 35
AMHERST, Mass. — The Bates women’s basketball team fell 76-35 in the quarterfinals of the NESCAC Championships on Saturday afternoon in Amerst.
The Purple and White (25-0) maintained their undefeated season, while the Bobcats wrapped up their year with an overall record of 8-16.
Senior Allie Coppola led Bates in her final game with 13 points, while freshman Carly Christofi added 10 points. Freshman Melanie Binkhorst scored five points off the bench and junior Lexie Nason pulled down a team-high seven rebounds.
Emma McCarthy led all scorers with 19 points for Amherst. She also pulled down a game-high nine rebounds in the winning effort.
Men’s basketball
Middlebury 88, Bates 84
MIDDLEBURY, Vt. — The Bates men’s basketball season ended with a valiant effort Saturday in the quarterfinal round of the NESCAC tournament, with the Bobcats erasing a 17-point deficit before succumbing 88-84 to the Panthers.
Senior twin brothers Marcus and Malcolm Delpeche led Bates with 18 and 17 points, respectively, with 12 points apiece in the second half . Freshmen guards Tom Coyne of Falmouth, Nick Gilpin of Hampden and Jeff Spellman all hit double figures in the game.
Senior Matt St. Amour poured in a game-high 34 points, making 11-of-21 shots from the field and 7-of-15 from three-point territory for the Panthers (22-3).
The Bobcats (15-10) maximized the final minute of regulation, scoring 11 points in the last 52 seconds. Marcus Delpeche made a pair of foul shots, then stole the ball from St. Amour and turned it into a layup to cut the lead to 82-77.
Middlebury led the turnover battle 18-8, the major statistic in Bates’ demise.
Marcus Delpeche finished his career with 1,025 and 692 rebounds, while Malcolm Delpeche closed out his career with 888 points and 637 rebounds for Bates.
Husson 94, UMaine-Farmington 87
BANGOR — Senior Raheem Anderson registered a team-high 29 points as Husson closed out the regular season with a 94-87 triumph over the University of Maine at Farmington in men’s basketball action Saturday afternoon.
Senior Alonzo McCain contributed eight points off the bench, and was all over the court, snatching up three steals and causing multiple turnovers for the Eagles (19-6). Sophomore Mitch Worcester also came off the bench to post a season-high 23 points, while senior Zach Curran chipped in with 16 points.
Riley Robinson and Amir Ross accumulated 17 points apiece for the Beavers (11-14) in the losing effort.
Junior Hockey
Cape Cod 7, L/A 3
LEWISTON — The Cape Cod Islanders scored three times in the third period en route to a 7-3 victory the Fighting Spirit.
Chris O’Donnell had two goals in the third period while Nevin Connors had the other. The Islanders jumped out to 2-0 lead in the first with goals from Aaron Deady and Cole Therrien.
Chris Conlin and Chuck Costello had the other goals for the Islanders.
Dylan Vrees notched his 33rd goal of the year for the Fighting Spirit. Caleb Labrie notched his 11th, while Crewz Berry put home his third goal of the season.
