PROVIDENCE, R.I. — Alfred Adrien Belanger, 71, of Westerly, R.I., passed away Saturday, Feb. 25, at Rhode Island Hospital, surrounded by his beloved family and friends. He was the husband of Lauren Gates Belanger. They shared 15 years of marriage together.
Born in Auburn, he was the son of Ivon and Adrienne Belanger. Alfred enlisted in the U.S. Navy at the tender age of 17, serving his country in Vietnam and rose through the ranks during his 20-year career to achieve the rank of senior chief. He had the rare opportunity to commission and decommission the CV-67 USS John F. Kennedy.
He was a 1984 graduate of Mohegan Community College, earning an associate degree in general education, becoming the first in his family to receive a college diploma. His 17 civil service years culminated with a retirement from supervisor of shipbuilding in Groton, Conn.
He was a dedicated father, grandfather, mentor, and served as a leader in the former Troop 2 Misquamicut with the Boy Scouts of America. He enjoyed camping, kayaking, dancing, karaoke, bike riding and donating his time to helping the community. He will forever be remembered as a man with a strong moral fiber, great wit and a loving heart.
He is survived by his two brothers of Lewiston, Roger and Roland Belanger, wife, Lauren Gates Belanger; and his three children, Stephanie Belanger Lenihan, Shane M. Belanger and Jarraid M. Belanger; his son-in-law, Chad C. Lenihan; and three grandchildren, Riley P., Ethan G., and Adam C. Lenihan.
