MECHANIC FALLS — RSU 16 Adult Education has announced upcoming learning opportunities.
Staying Home Alone: 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday, April 1. Designed by educator and Red Cross trainer Judy Emch, this course teaches 8- to 11-year-olds the fundamentals of staying home alone for short periods of time. Through puzzles, games and activities, students learn information they need to know in case a problem arises. The class includes a take-home booklet and certificate of completion. Tuition: $30.
Babysitter Certification: 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, April 1. Youth 12 and older can become informed and valuable childcare providers. Students will learn about developmental stages, bottle-feeding, diaper changing, safety and age appropriate activities. The course will include pediatric first aid, CPR and AED use. First aid topics include prevention, recognition and treatment for medical emergencies and injuries. Tuition: $60.
CDL Endorsement Preparation: By appointment. For those who need help preparing for CDL endorsements such as hazmat or Tanker, RSU 16 tutors can help. Tuition: $25 per endorsement.
Computer Classes: Wednesdays or Fridays, April 5 to June 9. From keyboarding and computer basics to Microsoft applications and Google docs, RSU 16 has flexible options for students to choose from. Tuition: $75 per session.
Self-Defense Basics for Women: 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, April 4. This one-night personal safety class for women and girls ages 13 and older is aimed at increasing awareness and prevention as well as teaching basic self-defense techniques. The instructor will be Tony Bennett of Bennett Karate Dojo in Poland, who has been studying karate for more than 20 years. Tuition: $20.
Medicare 101: 6 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, April 6. This class is offered by a SeniorsPlus representative to help seniors make informed decisions. Pre-registration is required. Tuition: Free.
Social Security — Your Questions Answered: 6:30 to 8 p.m. Thursday, April 13. This class will discuss Social Security options and the impact decisions have on retirement before individuals retire. Those attending can bring questions and discuss how Social Security fits into each retirement income plan, tax considerations and when to start taking benefits. Pre-registration is required. Tuition: Free.
