100 years ago, 1917
Traffic was at a standstill on College street extension, Lewiston, Friday forenoon. A large building was being moved up the street and completely blocked the highway from sidewalk to sidewalk. Seven pairs of horses were used and it took their combined strength to haul the building a few yards during the entire forenoon.
50 years ago, 1967
St. Dominic High School students celebrated their team’s 4-1 win last night over the Lewiston High School hockey team with a “victory parade” along some of Lewiston’s streets this morning. The parade started at 11:30, at the Bartlett Street school, went up Bartlett Street, to Birch and Bates Streets, to St. Peter’s School Auditorium, where it disbanded. Lewiston police were on hand during the march to handle the traffic situation. Defeating Lewiston, the Doms became Maine schoolboy champions and will represent the state in the New England tourney at Providence, R.I., next weekend.
25 years ago, 1992
Three members of the Gray Volunteer Fire Department, with more than 120 years total service among them, were given lifetime memberships and places on the roster of honor when the department held its annual dinner meeting, earlier this week. Current Fire Chief Jon Barton, firefighter and dispatcher Don Curtis, and former First Assistant Fire Chief Robert Sawyer were cited for their years of continuous service and for the example and standard they set for the rest of the department to follow. All three are still active firefighters.
