PARIS — Orders for delivery of rainbow, brown or brook trout to be delivered to private ponds are now being accepted by the Oxford County Soil & Water Conservation District.

The district is offering a special price on five- to six-inch brown trout this year. This size is especially good for those who are stocking their pond for the first time or those who don’t have any large trout in their pond.

All trout orders must be received by May 15. The fish will be delivered directly to private ponds by Pierce Associates/Shy Beaver Hatchery of West Buxton.

There will be a farm pond construction and trout-stocking workshop held Saturday, April 15, in Cummings Hall of First Baptist Church of Paris at 500 Paris Hill Road.

Beginning at 9 a.m., Candace Gilpatric, Natural Resources Conservation Service agricultural engineer, and Sonny Pierce of Shy Beaver Hatchery will lead a workshop on farm pond construction and stocking private ponds with trout. Both of these workshops are interesting, informative and will include plenty of time for individual questions and answers. The morning workshop, which will end at noon, will be followed by lunch and a field trip to a local farm pond for a “walk and talk.”

Pierce spent his career with Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife and is willing to share his extensive knowledge of trout and trout habitat. A permit to stock from the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife is required and may be obtained by going to the department’s website, or by calling or stopping in at the Oxford County Soil & Water Conservation District office.

Check-in for the day is 8:30 to 9 a.m. Snacks and lunch will be served. There is a fee of $20 for the day, which includes materials. Preregistration by April 7 is required.

The Oxford County Soil & Water Conservation District is at 17 Olson Road, South Paris.
