LEWISTON — Gary Louis Mason, 71, of Greene passed away peacefully, Friday, March 10, at Marshwood Center nursing home in Lewiston.

He was born May 15, 1945, in Bethel to Alfred C Mason and Bernice L Tibbetts. He attended schools in Greene and Turner. He lived most of his life in Greene.

He served in the U.S. Army from Feb. 27, 1964, to Dec. 26, 1966, and in the reserves until Feb. 27, 1970. Gary was trained at Fort Dix, New Jersey, and served in Germany, Company C, 45 BN, 35th Armored Regiment. He was a mechanic and worked on tanks.

He loved hunting, fishing and camping. He also loved his dog, Boo Boo, and 25-year-old cat, Bubba. He especially loved his deer, Lucky, whom he raised and cared for for many years. He enjoyed raising “beef critters,” chickens and pigs and loved to watch his old Western Movies, over and over, on his VHS.

He was a jack-of-all-trades and an expert mechanic. Gary raced stock cars at Oxford Plains and was a lumberjack for a number of years, as well as the town of Greene’s road foreman for several years.

Gary is survived by his sisters, Eleanor Flanders, Shirley Bititti and husband, Joe, Virginia Curtis, and Pat Green and husband, Dennis; one brother, Delbert Mason and wife, Marilyn. He also leaves four granddaughters and one great-granddaughter, many brothers-in-law and sisters-in law, as well as many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by parents; his daughter, Tammy Curtis; his brothers, Ernest, Richard and Albert Mason; and his sister, Janet Wajda.

The family wishes to thank Greene Rescue, VA Home Health nurses and the staff at Marshwood Center for their services in caring for Gary. The family wants to especially give many thanks to Gary’s good friends and close neighbors, Harold and Sandy Bates.
