BRIDGTON — The Calderwood Consort presents “Contrasts and Reforms,” early music from the medieval era to the Reformation, 2 p.m. Sunday, April 2, at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, 43 Sweden Road, also known as Route 93.
The admission is $10 and children are free.
The contrasts of the sacred and profane; the austerity of the Roman Chant compared to the sophistication of Burgundian and Renaissance counterpoint; the use of popular songs in the Catholic Mass; the overreach of the papal authority; the autonomous power of kings; the Reformation and Counter Reformation. To celebrate the 500th year of Luther’s Reformation of 1517, the program concludes with his chorale “A mighty fortress…” sung with the audience.
The Calderwood Consort has been performing early music throughout Maine since the mid-1970s as well as appearing with the Boston Camarata. Members of the Consort have included musicians with degrees from Oxford, the Royal Academy of Music in London and Bates College among other.
All concerts include program notes, text translations and spoken narratives and are performed in costume on replica period instruments.
