FARMINGTON — Voters passed all articles on Monday’s town meeting warrant appropriating a total budget of $5.89 million to operate town business and departments.
The total represents an increase of $288,306 over the proposed $5.6 million budget recommended by the Board of Selectmen.
Voters approved a motion to increase the Public Works Department’s budget by $250,000 for the purchase of a new truck this year. They also approved Farmington Public Library’s request for $196,029, an amount $38,306 over the board’s recommendation.
An estimated 2017 tax rate of $20.88 per $1,000 of valuation could rise by at least 50 cents to cover the new amount, Town Manager Richard Davis estimated during the meeting.
The number in attendance was estimated by a written ballot vote taken on the property tax limit levy set by the state. It passed, 89-21. Prior to the truck and library increases, the budget was expected to exceed the limit by $3,771.
One resident, Jon Bubier, urged voters to hold the budget to the limit by voting down an increase to the property tax limit.
During the day, an uncontested election for two seats on the Board of Selectmen and two seats on the Regional School Unit 9 board of directors was held.
Selectman Stephan Bunker was re-elected with 56 votes. Scott Landry was elected to the board with 70 votes.
Tami Labul took 63 votes and Ryan Morgan 54 votes for re-election to the school board.
