The Peru Board of Selectmen agreed Monday to allow Peru firefighters to wash their personal vehicles at the fire station.
PERU — The Board of Selectmen has agreed to allow members of the Peru Fire Department to use the fire station to wash their personal vehicles, according to Chairwoman Carol Roach.
The issue arose near the end of the board’s March 20 meeting, when Selectman Raquel Welch said she wanted to speak with Fire Chief Bill Hussey about the issue.
“It’s not a car wash,” she said. “People can’t just pull up there and say that they want to wash their cars. I don’t think that should be a privilege.”
Some townspeople at the meeting agreed with Welch, while Selectman Larry Snowman said that the issue didn’t bother him.
Hussey and some of the volunteer firefighters attended Monday’s meeting to voice their opinions, Roach said.
She said the discussion between Hussey and the board was “very cordial,” and that the board decided to support the firefighters’ use of the fire station to wash their vehicles.
In other business, selectmen continued discussing how to go about getting lists from all of the town’s department heads of equipment and materials that would cost more than $2,000 to replace.
At the board’s March 20 meeting, Welch suggested that Hussey and Road Commissioner Lee Merrill draft a list of each department’s major equipment and the age of each piece so the town can “figure out when they need to be repaired or replaced.”
The board voted to approve Welch’s suggestion, with the clarification that Hussey and Merrill list anything that would cost at least $2,000 to replace, not something that the town paid $2,000 for originally.
Roach said that since the March 20 meeting, the board “has learned that we have a good piece of the information we’re looking for already.”
She said that each department is required to provide a list of equipment to the town’s insurer, Kyes Insurance.
“We already have lists of equipment attached to our insurance policy, so it should be easy to figure out what we’re looking for,” Roach said.
