AUBURN — The Senior College at University of Southern Maine’s Lewiston-Auburn College and the Auburn Public Library will continue the Curious Minds Series with a seminar by Charlie Plummer on Abraham Lincoln titled, “The Man, Humorist, Story-Teller and Poet.”

This free program will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 11, at the Auburn Public Library, 49 Spring St., in the Androscoggin Community Room.

Dr. Plummer will talk about Lincoln’s life from growing up as a child to the man who would eventually become president. A focus of the program will be on the humorous stories Lincoln told and some of the surprising poems he wrote.

A popular speaker at the library and instructor at the Senior College, Plummer travels widely doing portrayals of Confederate and Union Civil War generals, including Joshua L. Chamberlain, Ulysses S. Grant, Robert E. Lee, Oliver Howard, and Stonewall Jackson, as well as ordinary people of that time.

His two passions are teaching and doing living-history presentations as some of the more famous Civil War generals.

Plummer entered Farmington State Teachers College with no plans to become a teacher. Rather, he had decided on a career as a naval aviator. But a plane crash off the coast of Korea ended that, and he returned to Auburn to begin nine years as a fifth-grade teacher. Following that, Plummer served for 20 years as an elementary school principal, retiring in 1989 as a family counselor.

Every spring, the Senior College and the Auburn Public Library partner to bring a free lecture series to the community. The lectures cover a variety of topics and run on a weekly basis throughout the month of April and May.
