Walking Blues
For Russell Libby
By Jay Franzel
Life’s a long sleep
the Haiku masters wrote.
We dream till Death wakes us.
This world’s a coffin
say Sufi poets.
Till Death pries the lid, we’re locked in.
When I walk I won’t say
I wake, wear wings,
am wise, have words or even know the way.
Passing black November branches,
the light a dove-like gray,
bird-song in the swale, grief is held at bay.
