LEWISTON — The YMCA of Auburn-Lewiston has officially taken over management of the Central Maine Medical Center Fitness and Wellness Center at the Lewiston hospital.

CMMC announced the change in early February, the same time it announced it was laying off 28 people and dropping plans for a project at Bates Mill No. 5.

A YMCA spokesperson said the center’s management has been in the process of transitioning to the Y since February. YMCA’s board of directors voted unanimously March 29 to take over the center.

The center will now be known as The Y at CMMC.

“The Y at CMMC will retain its identity as a center for wellness-seekers of all abilities,” said Steve Wallace, CEO at the Y. “But now its more than 1,000 members will have access to all Y programs and facilities, including the fitness center at 62 Turner St. in Auburn and YMCAs throughout New England.”

Rick Jalbert will continue as director of the CMMC location. Also staying: health and fitness specialists Abbey Goulet and Eric Vattaso, personal health counselor Sue Driscoll and wellness director Heather Young.

YMCA members who use the Auburn location can now use the CMMC facility, which offers medically oriented programs and personal training.
