Scholarships for business students

ELLSWORTH — Applications are currently being accepted for the Maine Community Foundation’s Patriot Education Scholarship Fund.

This renewable scholarship supports graduates of a Maine high school who are enrolled full or part time (minimum of nine credit hours per semester) in pursuit of a business degree, and who will be entering their sophomore, junior, or senior year of college. Preference is given to applicants who have a demonstrated interest in personal and commercial insurance professions.

Deadline for applications is June 1.

Safe Voices Walk/Run June 3

LEWISTON — Safe Voices, in partnership with Bates College, will hold its annual 5k Walk/Run to End Domestic Violence on Saturday, June 3. The goal is to spread awareness about domestic abuse and engage the community in supporting every person’s right to feel safe and live free from violence.

Participants can register as a 5k runner, 5k walker, or 1-mile walker. Once registered, participants raise money by collecting pledge donations for their walk/run efforts. All money raised will fund vital services to victims of domestic violence in Androscoggin, Franklin, and Oxford counties. Strollers and well-behaved dogs on leashes are welcome.

Raffle prize is UMaine Orono tuition

ORONO — The UMaine Alumni Association is sponsoring its annual tuition raffle to help fund its support of student organizations and alumni programs. The raffle prize is the equivalent of one year’s in-state undergraduate tuition, for the 2017 to 2018 academic year. The dollar value of the prize is $8,370, which the Alumni Association will pay to UMaine on behalf of the raffle winner, or his or her designee.

Along with covering the cost of the prize, the Alumni Association uses proceeds from the raffle to support the organization’s mission and programs.

Envelopes containing ticket stubs and checks must be postmarked before May 3 in order to be included in the drawing, which will take place on May 10 at 12 p.m., in Orono, at UMaine’s Buchanan Alumni House. The winner will be announced immediately afterward.

Indianhead Division seeks members 

ARLINGTON, Virginia — The U.S. Army Second (Indianhead) Division Association is searching for anyone who served in the Army’s 2nd Infantry Division at any time.

This year, the association will commemorate the 100th anniversary of the division, which was formed in France during World War I.

The annual reunion will take place Sept. 13 to 17 in Arlington, Virginia.

Digital fakes, phonies, and phishing

CARRABASSETT VALLEY — The Carrabassett Valley Public Library will give a presentation on Internet security at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 12.

People store vast amounts of information about their lives in digital form, and the presentation will discuss how to protect that data.

Using live examples of local and global websites you likely use, Tim Flight will show how companies track people and what individuals can to do block them. Discover the safest ways to pay online, create secure passwords that are easy to remember, and surf safe on public Wifi.
