Architect George Parker, left, discusses Fire Station repairs as Livermore Falls Selectmen Ron Chadwick, Jeff Bryant and Tom Barker listen during Tuesday’s selectmen meeting.

LIVERMORE FALLS — Architect George Parker talked to selectmen Tuesday about renovations to the fire station this summer.

New metal decking in the high bay and a new roof and heating system will be installed. There will also be new roof drains.

Parker said the water from the roof now drains into the sewer system. The new, internal drains would take the water into storm drains.

“The whole building doesn’t have any insulation at all,” Parker pointed out.

Insulation will be put in and covered with gypsum board.

Town Manager Kristal Flagg said that because there is soil contaminated with fuel near the station, the town has to do an Environmental Mitigation & Monitoring Plan before it removes any soil. Selectmen voted to have S.W. Cole Engineering Inc. of Augusta do the study for up to $3,000.

Selectmen and Parker discussed the size of exterior propane tanks that will be used for fuel.

“We’re proposing to put in a 1,000-gallon tank on the southwest corner of the property,” Parker said. “I don’t think the mechanical engineer would go along with multiple small tanks.”

However, selectmen and Fire Chief Edward Hastings IV recommended smaller tanks. Hastings said he was concerned about the cost of the larger tank, and suggested having 125-gallon tanks around the back of the building.

Parker is expected to have a final cost estimate for the fire station repairs at the selectmen meeting May 16.

The town will get a used firetruck from federal surplus at no cost to taxpayers, except the cost of fuel to drive it to Livermore Falls. Hastings said he found a 1995 KME fire engine at Hanscom Air Force Base in Bedford, Massachusetts. that would work well for the town.

The pumper has 33,000 miles on it. It has a Class A & B foam system, four-wheel drive and a five-person enclosed cab.

Hastings said he saw the truck and examined it for problems. The truck does start up and is in good working condition, he said.

The vehicle will replace a 1981 Mack, which the town will sell.

Selectmen voted to have Hastings obtain the truck. He said that after it is driven to Livermore Falls, the Fire Department will have Reliance Equipment of Vassalboro do a pump test and look for any problems.

In other business, selectmen:

* Appointed Ann Schwab to serve until June 13 on the Regional School Unit 73 board of directors. She will complete former Director Jackie Knight’s term. Knight stepped down in April.

* Appointed Dan Leclerc to a three-year term on the Livermore Falls Water District board of trustees; and

* Accepted a check for $3,000 from the Joseph Knapp Trust Fund for musical performances at the Livermore Falls Gazebo.
