Society opens for summer

POLAND — The Poland Historical Society plans to be open for the summer, from 1 to 4 p.m. on Thursdays in the old school house, Poland Corner, Route 26.

The new barn will be open for viewing.

MCF seeks handcrafts proposals 

ELLSWORTH & PORTLAND — The Maine Community Foundation seeks proposals to its Belvedere Traditional Handcrafts Fund for projects and organizations that promote traditional handcrafts in Maine.

An anonymous donor established the Belvedere Traditional Handcrafts Fund in 2007. Grant funding supports fiber arts, ceramics, basketry, jewelry, glass arts, woodwork, leather and metal crafts. It also includes traditional Native American handcrafts.

Grants are available for new or expanding projects and capacity-building activities. Online applications are available through the Maine Community Foundation at www.mainecf.org. The application deadline is June 15.

Farmers market today in Lewiston

LEWISTON — A farmers market with products from local farmers and crafters will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, May 13, at Tractor Supply Company, 619 Lisbon St.

POLAND — Guided walks will be offered on Sunday, May 21, at the Heart of Poland Conservation Area, showing the public the plants, animals, geologic and historical features of the reserve.

Alan Audet, amateur naturalist, and Fred Huntress, Poland Town Forester, will lead the guided walks. Participants should gather at 2:30 p.m. at the parking lot behind Ricker Memorial Library on Route 26. Hikers are also welcome to explore the trails on their own. 

The Heart of Poland has been a project of the Poland Conservation Commission and the Poland Trails Committee for the past five years. The project was made possible by a large number of individual contributions for the purchase of land and by enthusiastic support of the Selectboard.

Indianhead Division seeks members 

ARLINGTON, Virginia — The U.S. Army Second (Indianhead) Division Association is searching for anyone who served in the Army’s 2nd Infantry Division at any time.

This year the association will commemorate the 100th anniversary of the division, which was formed in France during World War I.

The annual reunion will take place Sept. 13 to 17 in Arlington, Virginia.
