NORWAY — The Board of Selectmen voted unanimously Thursday evening to approve a request to close Main Street from 1 to 2 p.m. Friday, June 2, for the Terry Cram crosswalk dedication ceremony.
The ceremony will begin at 1:30 p.m.
The board voted in January to dedicate the crosswalk in front of Guy E. Rowe School on Main Street to Terry Cram, the beloved, longtime head custodian and crossing guard who passed away in December.
Cram, who lived in South Paris, worked at Guy E. Rowe School as head custodian for many years and was the crossing guard, frequently dressing up in costumes for holidays and other events.
Secretary Robin Foster said that all 480 students will be on the front lawn in front of the school for the dedication ceremony, and that the public is invited to attend.
“Over 600 people came to the Oxford Hills Comprehensive High School for a dinner we held in Terry’s memory,” Foster said. “It was very successful. We hope we’re able to get a good turnout for this, too.”
She said that the noise of cars driving by the school would be “very distracting,” which is why she is seeking to have the section of Main Street in front of the school closed for an hour.
“(Terry) worked for the school for 18 years,” Foster told the board. “He deserves this.”
A plaque will be installed in front of the school with Cram’s name on it recognizing the crosswalk as the Terry Cram crosswalk.
The Board of Selectmen asked Police Chief Rob Federico if he had any issues with closing the road.
“I think it would be very appropriate to shut it down for this ceremony,” Federico said, adding that the town has closed the same section of Main Street for the annual Memorial Day parade.
“We would detour cars down Horne Street or up Harris Street, and send southbound traffic up Marston Street to Beal Street,” Federico said.
Town Manager David Holt said he thought it was “nice to see (Cram) recognized in such a way.”
Chairman Russell Newcomb agreed, telling the board that he knew Cram for a long time and felt it was a great way to recognize him.
“The kids at the school loved him,” he said. “I’m really pleased to see this happen. It’s going to be a great day.”
“It wasn’t a job to him,” Foster said. “He loved what he did.”
Selectmen Russell Newcomb, Warren Sessions Jr., Bruce Cook, Thomas Curtis and Bill Damon vote Thursday to approve a request by the Guy E. Rowe School to close the section of Main Street in front of the school on June 2 for a dedication ceremony to Terry Cram, the longtime head custodian who passed away in 2016.
