LEWISTON — The SeniorsPlus Education Center has announced upcoming classes, which are free and held at 8 Falcon Road unless stated otherwise.

Matter of Balance: 9 to 11 a.m. Wednesdays, June 7 to July 26, with Dana Morrell and Cecilia Natale. The workshop is designed to reduce the fear of falling and to increase activity level among older adults. Participants learn to set realistic goals to increase activity, change their environment to reduce risk factors in falls, and learn simple exercises to increase strength and balance.

Skin Cancer: 1 to 2 p.m. Monday, June 12, with Maureen Higgins, Dempsey Center.  The course will teach how to reduce skin cancer risks.

Understanding Dementia-Related Behavior: 10 to 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, June 13, with Alzheimer’s Association. Behavior is a powerful form of communication and is one of the primary ways for people with dementia to communicate their needs and feelings as the ability to use language is lost. Participants will learn to decode behavioral messages, identify common behavior triggers, and learn strategies to help intervene with behavioral challenges of Alzheimer’s disease.

Living with COPD: 1 to 2 p.m. Tuesday, June 13, with Angela Moore, Beacon Hospice. Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease is characterized by the restriction of airflow in the lungs. It includes chronic bronchitis, chronic obstructive bronchitis, emphysema, or a combination of the diseases. It is the fourth leading cause of death in the nation. The presentation will review the signs and symptoms, diagnosis, treatment, and ways to live with the chronic condition.

Tech HodgePodge: 2 to 4 p.m. Wednesday, June 14; instructor, Tim Verrill. Discussion of tips for searching online plus some savvy shopping tips. Learn about the Do Not Call list and getting rid of spam emails, and cloud storage on Dropbox – what it is and how to use it. The class size is limited to 24.

Crafting with Corinne: 2 to 3:30 p.m. Monday, June 19; instructor, Corinne Saindon, local artisan. Participants will create a unique birthday cards for both males and females using assorted stamps, punches, and embellishments. It is open to all levels. The class size is limited to eight. Cost: $5 for supplies. 

Safe Driving: 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Thursday, June 22, with Elwood Beach, AARP. Drivers 55 and older who complete the class are eligible for discounts on their auto insurance for three years. They should bring their driver’s license, lunch and membership card. Cost: $20, payable to AARP; $15 for AARP members. 

Smart Tips for iPhones and iPads: 2 to 4 p.m. Thursday, June 29, with instructor Tim Verrill. He will cover topics such as getting apps, setting reminders and notifications, how to close apps, using iCloud, and saving battery life. The class size is limited to 24.

Medicare Basics: 10 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday, June 24, with SeniorsPlus staff. Those attending will learn the basics and timelines of the complex system, when to sign up for what, and ways to save money.

Hypnosis: 1 to 2 p.m. Wednesday, June 28, with Susan Kane, MEd. Participants will learn what hypnosis is and what it isn’t. They will be invited to partake in a short, guided meditation experience.

Working with Pictures: 3 to 5 p.m. Thursday, June 22, with Tim Verrill. He will go over tools for working with pictures to crop, resize, remove red-eye, and have fun with effects, as well as some tips on better organizing photos. The class size is limited to 24.

Ongoing classes

Gentle Chair Yoga: 9 to 10 a.m. Mondays, June 19 to Aug. 14, with Tisha Bremner. Designed to increase vitality, gain a deeper sense of balance, and find inner calm, the class combines meditation, easy warm-ups, light stretches, and gentle yoga postures. Cost: $40 for eight weeks; $8 drop-in. 

Total Strength & Balance: 11:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. Mondays; 11:30 a..m. to 12:15 p.m. Wednesdays and Fridays; with Linn Morin. Cost: $3 for one class a week; $5 for any two classes a week; $6 for three classes a week. FMI, register: 207-523-9055.

The classes are for all — beginner or advanced — who are interested in improving strength, balance, and bone density.
