RANGELEY — Junior first baseman Zack Grover was prolific at the plate, splintering three hits and plating four runners as Buckfield dispatched Rangeley 12-8 in the Class D South baseball quarterfinals Thursday afternoon.

The Bucks (9-8) found themselves up by just one run, 6-5, after five innings when they rallied for four in the top of the sixth.

Pitcher Ethan Jackson helped his cause with three hits in the contest. Jake Kraske also collected three hits for Buckfield. Grover had two doubles and a single in his batch.

Pitcher Bo Beaulieu had two hits and two runs batted in for the Lakers (9-4) in the losing effort.

Wells 3, Spruce Mountain 0

WELLS — In a pitcher’s duel, it was Wells who found the scoreboard in a 3-0 win over Spruce Mountain in a Class B South quarterfinal baseball game Thursday.

Tyler Bridge had an RBI double in the fourth inning for the Warriors (11-5-1). They scored twice more in the bottom of the fifth by stringing together a couple singles from the bottom part of the order. The top of the order then drove them in.

Cam Cousins went the distance on the mound for Wells and only allowed three hits. He’s now 8-0 on the season.

Jordan Daigle went the distance for the Phoenix (12-6), scattering six hits.

Softball

Fryeburg 3, Gray-New Gloucester 1

FRYEBURG — Senior center fielder Mackenzie Buzzell went 3-for-3 including a home run to lead Fryeburg to a 3-1 victory over Gray-New Gloucester in quarterfinal softball action Thursday afternoon.

The game remained scoreless until the fourth inning when Hannah Dixon beat out a throw to home plate on a bases-loaded single by Jordan Grant for the Patriots (11-7).

The Patriots threatened again in the top of the fifth inning, but the Raiders (14-3) turned a double play on a sacrifice bunt attempt to close the frame.

Buzzell initiated the bottom of the fifth inning with a solo home run over the center-field fence. Tina Leblanc kept things going with a triple to center, and Nicole Bennett doubled her home. The third tally came on a passed ball.

Wells 6, Leavitt 0

WELLS — Kim Chase assembled two hits and two RBIs as Wells coasted to a 6-0 triumph over Leavitt in quarterfinal softball action Thursday afternoon.

The Warriors (17-1) jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning. DiDi Kenyon contributed a single, a double and three RBIs for Wells.

Hannah Chouinard had two of the Hornet’s (11-7) three hits in the losing effort.
