AUBURN — The Teen Summer Reading Program kick-off will feature the Natural Resources Council of Maine from 3 to 4 p.m. Thursday, June 29, in the Androscoggin Community Room, Auburn Public Library, 49 Spring St.
Within this summer’s theme, “Build a Better World,” teens will have a chance to explore environmental and sustainability issues and what they can do to help build a better world for their generation — and future generations.
The Natural Resources Council educates people about the beauty and value of Maine’s woods, waters, and wildlife. They share information about the challenges and opportunities natural resources face and connect people with ways to help protect Maine’s environment.
NRCM staff member Gabrielle Grunkemeyer will talk about NRCM, what’s happening in the environment right now and how to help protect it.
The reading program will run for six weeks, from June 29 to Aug. 10. In addition to reading, programs and activities will include a river walk along the Androscoggin with Androscoggin Land Trust, a trip to the Lake Auburn Watershed, an opportunity to design a tiny house using Sketch Up and the 3D printer and a composting workshop.
The Pizza & Pages Book Club will return to discuss three books: “Ashfall” by Mike Mullin, “Not a Drop to Drink” by Mindy McGinnis, and “Trashed” by Derf Backderf.
During the reading program, for each book read or for each program attended, teens will have a chance to enter into a weekly drawing. The grand prize this year, a digital camera, will be awarded to the top reader. There will also be a prize awarded for program participation. The awards will be given at the final summer event on Thursday, Aug. 10.
The program is for teens ages 12 to 18 and entering seventh through 12th grade.
