The seething water of the flooded Androscoggin is drawing Lewiston and Auburn people to the Miller Street area of Auburn, which runs parallel with Main but is upon lower land. The lower part of this street is filled with rows of swarming tenements — the upper part by many attractive little homes, each with a lawn, garden, or small back yard fronting upon the river. The tenements were half afloat. Everywhere, in open spaces between the houses, were mountains of debris and driftwood. The Androscoggin opposite Miller street was flecked with logs which had been hurled over the dam — logs belonging to the International Paper Company.

A Lewiston company that’s finding its fortune in others’ trash is expanding its services. “In order to keep a competitive edge we’ve added waste hauling,” said Peter Bolduc, 26, owner of Great Northern Recycling. The company has been a recycler and broker of paper and fiber products for four years, said project manager Kevin Scott. Now it offers its customers the option of dumping all waste into Great Northern trash bins. The waste hauler picks up the containers, tips them at its River Road plant and separates recyclables — paper, cardboard, glass, plastic, wood and metal waste — from the trash it takes to landfills and incinerators, Bolduc said.
