The first exhibition of drawings by Lewiston school children is being held at Jack & Hartley Company in their new rooms on the fourth floor of the Great Department Store. These rooms, which the firm is fitting up for a gift shop and art gallery, are most pleasantly located, and no pains are being spared to make them as attractive as possible. One looks down the length of the gift shop with its mirror-hung walls to the art gallery beyond. Here the soft harmony or the oriental color scheme is concentrated in a beautiful Chinese Renaissance rug hung opposite the entrance.
50 years ago, 1967
A recent edition of a firefighters’ magazine with nationwide circulation carries an article featuring the ingenuity of a member of the Lewiston Fire Department. The magazine — Fire Engineering — tells the story of Lt. Donald R. Bolduc and how he converted an old pumper into a low-cost cut-away trainer. Bolduc was assisted in the chore by Pvt. Richard Grondin. Total cost of the trailer-mounted training unit with cut-away engine, transmission, pump, and differential was $200. It’s construction took about three years.
25 years ago, 1992
Turner’s first proposed zoning map in rough draft form and information on identified activities within those areas will be aired at a public informational meeting Monday night. A volunteer committee has been working on the new zoning ordinance for several months and the district use charts represent the first major step in the process, according to land planner John Maloney of the Androscoggin Valley Council of Governments. “We are looking for input and opinions from the residents as to the districts which have been proposed and the uses in each district,” Maloney said.
