JAY — More than 40 motorcycle enthusiasts participated in the Inaugural Blessing of the Bikes, followed by a benefit ride, barbecue and dance for Special Olympics on May 20.

Twenty-five bikes and a Jeep were blessed by the Rev. Paul Dumais at St. Rose of Lima Church. The blessing was followed by a ride and Poker Run through Jay and surrounding communities.

Lane-Dube Amvets Post 33 hosted the barbecue, silent auction, 50/50 and dance.

A donation of $1,300 for Special Olympics was presented to the Amvets Post Commander George St. Pierre and Gary Desjardins, post Special Olympics representative, David Merrill and some of the riders in the event.

The riders are not affiliated with any organized group. They enjoy riding for events and nonprofit organizations where all the proceeds benefit the charity. They would like to make this an annual event.

Rick Olsen donated his 50/50 winnings and Sam Thompson donated his Poker Run winnings back to the funds.

All leftover food was packaged and delivered to the Western Maine Homeless Outreach in Farmington.
