RUMFORD — The Rumford Public Library’s summer program, “Build a Better World!,” schedule has been announced.
The summer fest programs are free and feature special guests who bring to the children an hour of fun-filled activity. All programs will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesdays from June 28 to July 26. All area children are welcome and must be accompanied by an adult. They do not need to belong to the library to attend the programs. The program is open to children of all reading abilities, from preschool through age 14.
Children are asked to read at least five days a week, for a length of time based upon the child’s age. Participants in the program will have four weeks to meet their reading goals and will receive certificates along the way.
All readers picking up information packets will receive a voucher good for a free ticket to a Portland Sea Dogs game.
The program will kick off Wednesday, June 28, with Mr I the Science Guy. Mr. Ionta, a long-time local teacher, will conduct experiments and amaze all with his scientific know-how.
On Wednesday, July 5, the guest will be Rob “Snakeman” White . White will bring his pet snakes, and talk about their habits, as well as myths and facts about the reptiles. There will be an opportunity for youngsters to meet some of the snakes up close and personal if they choose.
On Wednesday, July 12 , the program will be Mad Science of Maine. Children will step into the shoes of engineers in the science show designed to launch their imaginations into the field of engineering. Highlights include an explosive rocket launch and an intelligent robot who does Kung Fu and Yoga.
On Wednesday, July 19, the library will welcome Master Beekeeper Carol Cottrill. She will talk about bees and explain how important they are to the world’s food supply.
On Wednesday, July 26, Maine State Game Warden (retired), Tim Caverly will be a guest. He has written several books about the Allagash, including one spooky ghost story. He will talk about his experiences in untamed territories of the Maine woods.
Again this year, Rumford Public Library is part of a NEA program, providing food for those under 18 who would like to have lunch. It will be served at noon and no library card is needed.
