PARIS – A run/walk fundraiser in memory of a West Paris girl who passed away in 2012 will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. Sunday, July 16, at the Gouin Athletic Complex on Alpine Street.
The fundraiser is titled Live, Laugh, Run: Becca 4-Ever in our Hearts. It celebrates the life of Rebecca Mason, a 16-year old Oxford Hills Comprehensive High School student who was killed in a car accident in January 2012.
The same accident also took the life of Logan Dam, 19, a former OHCHS student.
Tracie Mason said that last year, she organized a run/walk fundraiser in memory of her daughter to “help give back to the community.”
“The community was always there for us, so we wanted to give something back to them,” Mason said.
She said more than 300 people registered for the 2016 run/walk, which raised $5,000 for college scholarships.
This year, the theme is Christmas in July, Mason said.
There will be a timed race for runners, and an untimed walk.
All money raised will go to two college scholarships established in Mason’s name.
Some funds will also sponsor several eighth grade students to attend field hockey camp, or some other athletic camp, in preparation for high school varsity sports.
Mason said she hopes to continue holding the run/walk as an annual event.
“The idea is to keep doing this and keep raising money for the scholarships every year,” Mason said.
Those interested in participating in the run/walk have until 4 p.m. Saturday, July 15 to sign up.
