Bee Transport
By Doug Woodsum
Not flying, but hovering and buzzing,
hundreds of bees form a fringe of humming
in the blossom-laden apple tree: sound
like a news reel world war bomber squadron.
The apple tree too seems to be hovering,
the great buzzing having shaken it loose
from the Earth. The bees rotate to the right
then left as if each blossom is a nut
needing loosening from a bolt, so the tree
can truly float away with the bumblers.
If, with slow care, you climb to the second
or third crook of the tree, you can be there
vibrating within the great hum; you can feel
trembling limbs turning night dew into gold.
