RUMFORD — A $900,250 bond to pay for a new roof on Mountain Valley High School in Rumford passed by a vote of 279-39 on Tuesday.
Regional School Unit 10, which includes Rumford, Mexico, Roxbury, Hanover, Buckfield, Hartford and Sumner, will only need to pay back $343,085 over 10 years at no interest.
Superintendent Deborah Alden said at the school board meeting Wednesday night that the district will begin advertising for bids over the weekend in a newspaper and on the school system’s website.
RSU 10 has until July 31 to complete any necessary paperwork for the roof bond, and the project is to be completed one year from that date.
In the winter of 2014, more than 65 roof leaks developed over classrooms, the gym and the auditorium, prompting relocation of several classrooms for several weeks. Repairs were made by the following year.
Regional School Unit 10 was approved for a loan from the Maine Department of Education’s School Revolving Renovation Fund, which provides assistance to school systems to ensure that students have a safe, healthy and appropriate learning environment.
The fund is financed through the Maine Municipal Bond Bank and remains a state and local partnership, with each providing part of a project’s funding. The Maine Department of Administrative and Financial Services, Bureau of General Services provides engineering expertise, technical reviews and bidding and contract assistance for School Revolving Renovation Fund projects.
