JAY — Selectpersons will hold a special meeting at 4 p.m. Thursday at the Town Office to appoint residents to a Solid Waste Committee.
Following the appointments, the board will meet in executive session to discuss union negotiations.
The committee is expected to look at options and make recommendations to possibly offset the cost of curbside pickup of trash and recyclables, if voters approve of restoring it, and to look at the operations at the Transfer Station. One resident said on July 10 that the current hours do not work for a person who works days and is on-call Saturdays.
The town’s Recycling and Waste Disposal Ordinance also needs updating, Town Manager Shiloh LaFreniere said. It was last updated June 14, 2011.
The committee will decide what it wants to do once it meets, she said.
The town did away with contracted curbside collection on July 1. Voters approved a budget at the annual town meeting April 25 that did not include money for the service.
Selectpersons accepted a petition signed by 373 registered voters July 10 to hold a special town meeting to ask voters to raise and appropriate $120,000 to restore the contract for curbside collection. The meeting is set for Aug. 14, but a time and venue had not been determined, LaFreniere said.
She was waiting for a representative of Regional School Unit 73 to get back to her to see whether Spruce Mountain middle or high school is available for the meeting.
As of Tuesday morning, 10 people had signed up to be on the Solid Waste Committee. Selectpersons Gary McGrane and Judy Diaz are among them. Others are Mike Fournier, Alfred Dufour III, Delance White, Tom Goding, Suzanne Czarnecki, Marilyn Morse, Greg Given and Richard Harvell.
