100 years ago, 1917
An exciting runaway took place on Park Street, Lewiston, yesterday when a horse owned by Charles D. Hasty of Auburn became frightened and ran through the park and down Park Street. The horse had only been here from the west three or four days and was young and easily startled. He was harnessed into an old wagon and the crew under the employ of I. Simard of Lewiston, were ready to go down to Lisbon on a haying job. All in the cart jumped and no one was hurt, either of the crew or of those along the street.
50 years ago, 1967
(PHOTO CAPTION) Job Corpswoman Toni Ackerman of Montana, a Sioux Indian, will lead a delegation of 21 trainees from the Poland Spring Job Corps Center for Women, who will participate in the Penobscot Pageant at Old Town, July 22 and 23. All of the girls taking part are American Indians. Miss Ackerman wears a Sioux costume and displays a shield, both made specifically for the occasion. All those participating will have their own costumes.

An experiment in collaboration that has lasted over a decade, the Lewiston-Auburn Economic Growth Council has helped another six businesses grow so far this year, creating at least 95 more jobs. Since January, the growth council has given out $180,000 in loans and assistance, matching investments totaling $3.6 million made separately by four Lewiston and two Auburn businesses. “Our job Is to go out and make new industrial growth happen,” said council Executive Director Steven Heavener. “Right now L-A is probably the most active, industrial growth-wise, in the state.”
