WILTON — The Board of Selectpersons Tuesday unanimously approved hiring Charles Lavin of Wilton to serve as the town’s new code enforcement officer.
Lavin has filled in on an interim basis under the guidance of Code Enforcement Officer Adam Cote, who recently resigned to pursue ownership of a local business, Town Manager Rhonda Irish said.
Lavin, an engineer who now does consultant work, decided to apply and was one of four candidates interviewed, she said.
He will work two days a week for the town at a wage of $18 per hour. Cote will continue to help until Lavin can acquire needed certifications, she said.
Lavin resigned from his seat on the Planning Board to take the position.
Selectpersons appointed four members, two full positions and two alternates, to the Planning Board.
Cherieann Harrison, who currently represents Wilton on the school board, and Micheal LeBlanc were appointed to the two open positions. Harrison’s term will expire in 2018 and LeBlanc’s in 2019. Both attended the meeting.
Alternate members appointed were Jeff Chaisson for a five-year term and Norman Hulbert for a one-year term.
In other business, Irish said the town has received the $150,000 facade grant applied for through the Community Development Block Grant program.
About 10 businesses have expressed interest in the reimbursement program.
Businesses front the cost of facade renovations and then are reimbursed up to 50-percent, Irish said.
A kick-off meeting was planned for Wednesday. Business owners who were unable to attend that meeting are still able to participate, she said.
Lovett Woodworks LLC, dba Maine Made Furniture, a customized furniture company at 128 Weld Road, has received a $50,000 grant from the Department of Economic and Community Development under the Workforce Development Program for training of employees, she said.
Carrier Welding Inc. on Depot Street is still waiting to hear on the status of a $240,000 CDBG grant application under the Economic Development Program,
During a special town meeting in June, voters authorized town participation in the grant applications.
Selectpersons continued to keep an application for renewal of liquor licenses on hold.
During their last meeting, Selectpersons tabled an application for Wilton Golf Holdings LLC, doing business as Wilson Lake Country Club due to a lack of payment on about $21,000 owed in real estate and property taxes.
Since that meeting, Irish received an email indicating potential payments from the business but the town has not received any funds, she said.
