AUGUSTA (AP) — Three organizations tied to a Maine casino referendum campaign that is being investigated by state officials have missed a deadline for reporting financial activity.
The Portland Press Herald reported (http://bit.ly/2teZ9im ) that the committees, which are funding a campaign to bring a casino to York County, were already under scrutiny when they missed a deadline Monday.
The director of the Maine Ethics Commission said there could be penalties for tardiness unless the committees had no financial activity to report.
On Friday, the commission voted to delay an investigation into the ballot initiative’s compliance with campaign finance laws to give officials time to turn over key documents. The commission is looking into the source of more than $4 million in campaign funds.
