AUBURN — Richard T. McLaughlin, 80, of Greenwood, passed away peacefully Monday, July 17, at the Auburn Hospice House.

Richard was born in Machias on Jan. 25, 1937, the son of Laura E. Tribou of Norway and Leland Hanson of Kingman. In 1940 he was adopted by Rena E. (Tribou) McLaughlin and Bernard W. McLaughlin of South Paris. He attended schools in the Oxford Hills Region.

He faithfully served his country in the U.S. Army as a radio controller in Germany.

For most of his life, Richard worked as a first class machinist, working at HIG Inc., Pratt & Whitney in Connecticut, Maine Machine Products in South Paris and Downeast Machine of Bridgton.

He was a professional archer for many years competing in tournaments throughout New England. In 1975 he was offered the opportunity to compete for the United States in the 1976 Olympics, but he declined. In 1983 he traveled to Nepal to hike Mount Everest with an expedition to follow Sir Hilary’s quest. Later years were spent alongside his father, Bernard, nurturing the gardens at Captain’s House in South Paris. He resided at his beloved camp in Greenwood for 35 years, while maintaining his, and his parents, wonderful gardens. He was a rock hound, collector of specimens and many oddities.

Surviving are a half-brother, Steve Witham of Gray; two sons, Tony of Greenwood, and Michael and his wife, Betty of Norway; his daughter, Kathy McLaughlin of Norway; five grandchildren, Jason McLaughlin, Courtney McLaughlin, Tyler McLaughlin, Travis McLaughlin, and Kristy McLaughlin; and five great-grandchildren, Karley Skinner, Colby Bettencourt, Kimberly McLaughlin, Keegan McLaughlin and Joshua McLaughlin.
