LEWISTON — L/A Arts will work with students from the 21st Century Summer Program at Lewiston High School to install a 25- by 18-foot wheat paste mural project – a temporary public art installation – that will be mounted on the empty wall at the corner of Lisbon and Cedar streets.
The design was created by the students on the theme of Lewiston’s Kennedy Park. Their designs were composited, photographed and turned over to a graphic designer who enhanced the color saturation with imaging software. The layouts have been printed in full color on large format, 36-inch-wide paper.
Using long-handled rollers and brushes, ladders and staging, the students will work with L/A Arts staff and local artists to apply a paste made of flour and water to the wall, adhere the paper prints, then coat them with the same paste.
“This is a Victorian era technique for poster hanging, adapted to temporary art installations. The beauty of it is, depending on the weather, it may last for a couple years or it can be power-washed off for a fresh installation,” said L/A Arts Director Louise Rosen.
Ten students have worked on the design, each drawing different sections of the park. Added to their work are black and white photos of certain park features, such as the Civil War monument, that appear more historical in nature. The student crew will be working between 1:30 and 3:30 p.m. on both days.
