AUBURN — A Maine Turnpike overpass is expected to be closed for about three months starting next week.
The Hackett Road Bridge that spans the toll highway will be closed for construction starting Tuesday, Maine Turnpike Authority officials wrote in a news release.
The work consists of repairs to a steel girder that was struck by a vehicle that was over maximum height as well as raising the height of the overpass in an effort to avoid future incidents. In addition, workers will replace the surface of the roadway and make repairs to the concrete deck and substructure.
During the closure, a maintenance/emergency vehicle access ramp will be constructed.
All detour traffic will be directed to Broad Street, then Witham Road, South Main Street and Old Danville Road, a total length of 2.8 miles. Roughly 600 vehicles travel over the Maine Turnpike on the Hackett Road Bridge each day. Motorists will be kept apprised of construction details by message boards.
The $1.2 million project, which was awarded to Wyman & Simpson, Inc. of Richmond, is scheduled to be complete by mid-November.
The Maine Turnpike Authority “appreciates motorists’ patience and understanding during this construction,” the new release reads.
