WINTHROP — The many voices of the violin will spoken by Maine fiddler and violinist Owen Kennedy as he performs “From Fiddle to Classical & Back Again” on Wednesday, Aug. 9, at 6:30 p.m.
The program will feature Maritime and Celtic fiddling, briefly head back to the late Baroque period, move forward with classical music that borrows traditional melodies, and then return to fiddling from Quebec and New England.
Ellen Gawler will be up on stage with Kennedy for a few sets, as will Don Cunningham and Cindy Larock of the Maine Folque Co-op. The pianist Chiharu Naruse will accompany Kennedy for the Fiocco Allegro and Vittorio Monti’s Czardas. Madelyn Kennedy, Kennedy’s sister, will perform a selection of Bartok’s Romanian Folk Dances.
This family-friendly program of fun, lively fiddle tunes combined with a few dramatic, high-energy classical pieces will be performed at Winthrop United Methodist Church, 58 Main St. in Winthrop.
Suggested minimum donations of $5 per adult or $15 per family are appreciated. Ten percent of the show’s proceeds will go to the WUMC mission for Nicaraguan schoolchildren, to help the children of sister church in Sabana Grande attend school.
Parking is available on the street or at the church parking lots on either side of the church, with additional parking at the town parking lot by the post office.
Light refreshments will be served after the performance.
Kennedy is a young fiddler whose love of traditional music and enthusiasm for performing has captivated audiences of all ages.
