RUMFORD — The second annual Danny Garneau Memorial Flag Football 7 vs. 7 Tournament will take place on Saturday, August 12.

Games will start at 10:30 a.m. on the Chet Bulger Football Field at the Hosmer Complex.

This event is organized by members of the Mountain Valley 2011 senior class from the 2008 and 2010 Maine Football Class B in honor of Garneau, who passed away in 2010 following complications from leukemia.

Last year’s inaugural event raised $1,200, resulting in a $1,000 scholarship being presented.

Co-coordinators of the tournament are class members Ben Higley and Cam Kaubris.

Higley said they are shooting for more than last year’s six teams. “There’s teams from MVHS and Dirigo is trying to put together a team. There are already two all-girl teams for the tournament.”

Players on the teams pay $10 apiece. The winning team will be presented with tournament championship t-shirts. They are also trying to get more schools/communities involved in the tournament.

“I’ve reached out to several high schools. We’re trying to get them involved. We want to build it up and also do t-shirts every year,” said Higley.

He said he wanted other high schools to know, “If your high school enters a team, that makes seniors at that high school eligible for the Danny Garneau Scholarship.”

Regarding this event, Higley said, “It’s kind of like a remembrance of everyone who passed away during the high school period of people’s lives. We want to make this an event that people can come and remember the people they lost and enjoy what they used to have in high school through the tournament.”

The timing of the event is that it takes place right before the high school football double sessions get underway.

To register, or for donations from individuals and businesses toward the scholarship, contact Kaubris at (207) 418-7594 or Higley at (207) 357-1717. For updates on the tournament, visit their Facebook page at “River Valley Memorial Flag Football Tournament.”
