LEWISTON — Richard C. Hurd, 80, of Auburn died Wednesday, Aug. 9, at Central Maine Medical Center, with his loving family by his side, after a courageous battle with cancer.
He was born in Lewiston on June 9, 1937, a son of the late John and Sadie (Langlois) Hurd. He was educated in Auburn and graduated from Edward Little High School, Class of 1955, he then went on to proudly serve in the U.S. Navy. After returning from the Navy, he went to college, graduating from Wentworth Institute of Technology and the University of New Hampshire.
Richard married his soul mate and love of his life, Marylou Abbott, in Lewiston on April 4, 1964, and together they started their family in New Hampshire. They moved back to their home state of Maine in 1974 to be close to family. He worked for many years at the Hartford Agency in Lewiston.
Richard loved photography and was a member of the Lewiston Camera Club. He especially loved being outside in nature and taking photos. Richard was an avid fisherman and hunter; he also loved spending time with his friends at their hunting camp in Temple. He enjoyed playing golf and could usually be found at many of the golf courses in Maine, especially Martindale, Foxridge and Poland Spring. His greatest joy was his family, especially his grandchildren. He enjoyed watching them grow and following them in their sporting endeavors.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Marylou of Auburn; his three daughters, Lynn Austin of Wales, Donna Lafean and husband, Chuck, of Auburn, and Darlene Koukos and husband, George, of Scarborough; his sister, Sheila Wheaton and husband, Jim, of Virginia; his brother, Robert Hurd and wife, Nancy, of Auburn; seven grandchildren, Kimberly Austin, Kasey Austin and her companion, Nicholas Johnston, Ryan Lafean, Tyler Lafean, Emma Koukos, Haley Koukos, and Sydney Koukos, and a great granddaughter Lillian Johnston. He was predeceased by his sister Geraldine Moore.
