DEAR SUN SPOTS: The West Sumner Universalist Church is holding its sixth annual Whatever Sale to benefit the church on Saturday, Aug. 26, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. This year’s event is the same as last year’s, featuring a ticket auction of 30 to 50 items with the drawing at 1:30 p.m. We would appreciate any donations for this, especially themed baskets in memory of loved ones. As always, the food and bake sale, cutlery sales and a hearty lunch will be available. Anyone wishing to prepare their favorite recipe will be welcomed!

ANSWER: The church’s news release goes on to say that this year’s fundraising efforts will continue to focus on repairs to the crumbling foundation of the church’s horse shed, which is in danger of collapse. The horse shed is a separate structure as old as the church building itself, which is on the National Register of Historic Places. It is believed that this may be the only old church in Maine that still has an existing horse shed. Imagine! Does anyone out there have memories of going to church by horse and buggy?

Dear Sun Spots: Thank you for publishing my request for perennials on July 13. The replies were astonishing. I wish to thank all the generous, friendly gardeners who gave me many beautiful, healthy perennials to establish my new flower beds. This also gave me the opportunity to visit and enjoy many beautiful gardens in the L-A area and surrounding communities.
