DEAR SUN SPOTS: We’re fast approaching Veterans Day on Saturday, Nov. 11, when we will take time to honor our American servicemen and servicewomen who served in many past wars or conflicts or who are now serving at this time in Iraq, Afghanistan or other parts of the world. Some have given their all, including their lives, so the rest of us will continue to be free in this great country, the United States of America.

You can honor a family member or friend who has served in any war or past conflicts, living or dead, in any branch of the U.S. military by having their name engraved on a memorial stone in Lewiston’s Memorial Park.

The only conditions are that the veteran has roots in Maine, or his family lived in Maine, and that the veteran received an honorable discharge. Copies of discharge documents need to be provided along with payment of $35 for the engraving.

We will be unveiling Monument No. 30 on Memorial Day weekend 2018 (Saturday at 10 a.m.). ANSWER: This is very important information here and I want to make sure everyone who wants to take part in honoring their soldier in this way has time to collect their information and get it to Norm. The Veterans Memorial Park on the corner of Lincoln and Main streets is a handsome reminder of all the area servicemen and servicewomen who have sacrificed for their fellow Americans. I highly recommend you take a walk through and meditate on those who served our country throughout the years.

DEAR SUN SPOTS: The Knights of Columbus is helping to bring some warmth to children in need during the winter months. In the past five years they have been able to give new winter coats to over 1,000 kids in our community, thanks to participants’ generosity and support.

The Holy Family Knights of Columbus will hold a benefit spaghetti and meatball supper to benefit their “Coats-4- Kids” program on Friday, Sept. 22, at the Holy Family church hall from 4 to 6:30 pm. Tickets will be sold after each Mass at Holy Family Church the weekend of Sept. 16 and are $7 for adults, $3 for children under 12 and under 4 is free.

If you cannot go to the supper charitable donations are greatly appreciated. You can mail them to: Holy Family Council 10,019, P.O. Box 7940, Lewiston, 04243.
