CAPE ELIZABETH (AP) — A minor earthquake is being blamed for a small boom and tremor in a southern Maine community.
The U.S. Geological Survey said the magnitude 2.0 earthquake at midday Thursday was centered 3.7 miles, or 6 kilometers, southeast of Portland.
Geophysicist Don Blakeman told the Portland Press Herald that people who reported hearing a boom were hearing the sounds of rocks breaking near the surface.
Cape Elizabeth Police Chief Neil Williams said residents called in hearing and feeling what seemed like an explosion. There were no reports of damage or injuries.
