BETHEL — Western Mountains Senior College‘s fall term will offer seniors the rare opportunity to learn something new, refresh latent talents, re-explore subjects of interest and gain a deeper understanding of the world.
On the lighter side, subjects include American Mah Jongg (learn as you play), Creative Writing, Drawing and Painting and Performance in short plays (no memorization required).
Science, history and current event buffs can take Science for Seniors, Philosophy 101 and The Witchcraft Crisis of 1692.
The Great Decisions, America’s oldest and largest citizen discussion group on foreign policy challenges, fall term will focus on the final four of this year’s topics: Trade, Jobs and Politics; Conflict in the South China Sea; Prospects for Afghanistan and Pakistan; and Nuclear Security: The Enduring Challenge of Nuclear Weapons.
Janet Stowell, Bethel resident and member of Great Decisions since its inception, said, “It’s exciting to know the background of what’s happening in the world.” She adds “There’s always a great group of people creating great discussions. We have a wonderful time.”
Free community events will include Elder Abuse: A Community Problem with Community Solutions, Be Safe in Your Home, Revealing the Mysteries of Autumn Colors, A Family’s Immigration to the U.S. and Ethnicities: What’s Your Family’s Story?
Registration for the fall term begins on Thursday, Aug. 31. Some classes are limited.
The classes are informal, often held during the day at Telstar High School. Western Mountains Senior College serves primarily those over age 50, with associate memberships for younger folks. Membership, which includes potluck suppers, outings and a variety of cultural and community service activities, is $25 a year.
