DIXFIELD — Police Chief Jeff Howe recently introduced selectmen to the department’s newest officer, Gerald “Jerry” F. Maccione IV of Norridgewock.

“I expect to see him completing his field training by the first of October and being able to start patrol on his own,” Howe said at the board’s Aug. 21 meeting.

Maccione started with the department July 24. He is scheduled to attend the Maine Criminal Justice Academy Basic Law Enforcement Training Program in January 2018.

“I truly expect Gerald will make a fine officer,” Howe said. “He is a hit with the kids in town already. He is smart and he is eager to learn.”

Howe said the four-person department is still without a lieutenant, a position he has been unsuccessful in filling. He asked the board to consider having a sergeant instead, which might result in more applicants.

In other business, Public Works Director Randy Glover said they hope to be paving Rollins Ridge in East Dixfield by the end of September.

The board appointed Ken Hinkley to a one-year term on the Planning Board and Sue Holmes to a three-year term as an alternate.

Selectmen signed and approved the Go Gold proclamation in support of Child Cancer Awareness month in September. The proclamation has been signed by numerous Maine towns.

The proclamation started in Bethel with Hugs for Hailey.

The board tabled action on a moratorium on recreational retail marijuana establishments and social clubs.
