MECHANIC FALLS — A fire believed to have started from logging equipment Tuesday evening burned nearly an acre of woods off Route 121 at the Oxford town line, Fire Chief Fred Sturtevant said.
No one was injured and no buildings were damaged, he said.
Sturtevant said the fire was about three-quarters of a mile in the woods near the train tracks. He said a forest ranger at the scene believes the fire was most likely caused by logging equipment cutting in the area.
Four-wheelers and other vehicles were used to get firefighters and water to the scene. Eight towns and about 50 firefighters responded.
Sturtevant said he was grateful for the mutual aid from Poland, Norway, Minot, Oxford, Paris, Otisfield and Hebron.
It took about 5,000 gallons of water to knock down the flames, he said.
The fire was reported at 5:27 p.m. and was out by 8:30 p.m., the chief said.
