Memorial Horseshoe Tournament planned
FARMINGTON — The 11th annual Donn Barker Memorial Horseshoe Tournament to benefit the Elks Lodge Back Yard Fund will be held Saturday, Sept. 2, at the West Farmington Elks Lodge.
Registration, which costs $10, will begin at 10 a.m. and the tournament will start at noon.

Scribner’s Mill last seasonal open house
HARRISON — The Scribner’s Mill and Homestead will be open from 1 to 4 p.m. Monday, Sept. 4, Labor Day, for the last time this season.
Visitors have the opportunity to view the restoration progress being made to the interior of the mill. If all goes as planned, the sash saw may be installed by Sept. 4.
Tours include the mill area where dry (slack) barrels are made, the long shed where shingles are manufactured, and the blacksmith shop.
Across the street from the mill, the 1849 Scribner Homestead will be open for guided tours. In the barn are exhibits of early sawmill equipment. Behind the homestead barn is the reconstructed ice house with a display of ice harvesting equipment.
Adult admission is $5. Private personal or group tours will be available this fall.

Book Café to meet
MEXICO — The Mexico Public Library Book Café, the adult reading group, will meet on the first Wednesday of each month from 5:45 to 7 p.m.
New members are always welcome.
Veterans Appreciation Trap Shoot
PARIS — Norway-Paris Fish & Game will host a Veterans Appreciation Trap Shoot from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.Wednesday, Sept. 6, at the club range, 744 Buckfield Road.
Veterans and the community are invited to join for two rounds of voice activated trap and a cookout style hot dog lunch. Participants encouraged to bring their own shot gun, but the club will have shot guns available if needed. Registration is required.
The rain date will be Wednesday, Sept. 13.

‘Lost Indian Tribes’ presentation
LOCKE MILLS — The Greenwood Historical Society has invited former Bethel native Peter R. Stowell to its September meeting to discuss “The Lost Indian Tribes of Western Maine.”
Stowell will tell who the tribes were, where they lived and what happened to them at a meeting at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 6, at the Locke Mills Town Hall, 270 Main St.
In 1620 when the Pilgrims landed at Plymouth Rock, western Maine teemed with more than a dozen Indian tribes, most of them situated along the Kennebec, Androscoggin and Saco rivers. Yet by the time America won its independence from England a little more than 150 years later, the tribes had disappeared.
Stowell is the author of two books for the Acadia Publishing Company of Charleston, South Carolina: “Images of America — Dixfield” and “Images of America — Old Town.”

PARIS — Floyd A. Harlow Jr. VFW Post 9787 will meet at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 6, at the post home, 58 East Main St.
Old Town House museum open
WATERFORD — The Waterford Historical Society has announced that the Old Town House museum will be open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays throughout September, except for Labor Day.
