DEAR SUN SPOTS: Regarding the question about the closure of Joe’s Barbershop in the Aug. 24 column, Joe is a good friend of mine and being that he’s in his late 70s, he decided to retire, sell the barbershop, and is now going fishing and playing golf, which he richly deserves. — Norm, Auburn

ANSWER: It seems that Joe was very well-liked and is missed. If any of his former clients want to recommend where they are getting “a little off the top” now that Joe is out of the business, here’s your chance!

DEAR SUN SPOTS: I live in an older home and in the past few months, I have noticed an unpleasant musty odor in the house. Friends have suggested that it might be mold or something else equally unhealthy. I have no idea how to test for mold or anything else. Can you list some companies that can come in and do the tests and, if they find what it is, provide a remedy? Thank you. — No name, no town

ANSWER: Before you call in the big guns to test for mold, you’ll want to be able to describe where the icky odor is coming from. Is it throughout the entire house or localized? Could you have a leaky pipe or an older washing machine or dishwasher? Has the carpet gotten wet from leaving a window open during a rainstorm? Is the smell worse in the basement? Wet basements, etc. are certainly a “thing” here in Maine! Is the floor down there wet?

If the odor originates in the basement, purchasing a dehumidifier and/or ventilation system could alleviate the odor. Sometimes drainage along the foundation needs to be installed. It’s certainly best to have a professional take a look. I have used TC Hafford Basement Systems (783-2500). They offer free estimates and are very thorough. I also recommend Servpro (783-2500). Let’s gather together some recommendations for this reader!

DEAR SUN SPOTS: We are looking for crafters who would like to participate in our Fall Festival and Craft Fair at Montello Heights, 550 College St. in Lewiston, on Oct. 14 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Call Marlene at 786-7149 for more information. No vendors please! Thank You. — Marlene, Lewiston

ANSWER: Now this sounds fun! I love those fall craft fairs and get most of my Christmas shopping done. For those of you who don’t know, Montello Heights is a lovely retirement community that’s been in existence for 20 years.

DEAR SUN SPOTS: A heart-felt thank you to those who donated items for the yard sale at the Spiritualist Church of Eternal Life. It was such a success, we’re doing it again! Our next yard sale is scheduled for Sept. 23 and will be held in the church parking lot. We are once again asking for your support as we’re a small church and this helps pay for utilities and maintenance. Please call Sue Caron at 754-8417 to schedule a pickup or delivery date. The church is at 352 Crowley Road in Sabattus. — Sue, no town
